Our university was founded as the Oaxacan Arts and Science Institute. In 1955, The Institute was renamed “Benito Juarez” University. After more than 180 years, the U.A.B.J.O. has significantly grown in the number of schools, institutes, faculty and students.
Two mexican presidents -Benito Juárez and Porfirío Díaz- as well as other notable personalities in mexican history were former students of the UABJO.

The UABJO academic objectives include ofering advanced and college degree programs as well as to provide specialized instruction to professionals, researchers, and professors who contribute to the development of the region and the country.
As the biggest university in Oaxaca, It organizes and releases humanistic and scientific research, mainly on the conditions and problems of the region.
